A topical sermon may creatively add redemptive truth to the message since the preacher is not bound to disclose the precise meaning of a specific text in such a message. The much repeated characterization of Spurgeon that “no matter where he began in Scripture, he always took a shortcut to the cross,” exemplifies a method that bypasses the direct statements in the text. This is not to say that a topical sermon necessarily leads to unbiblical conclusions or to inappropriate redemptive connections.
